National governments and international organizations impose trade restrictions to achieve foreign policy goals and national security objectives, such as preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), addressing human rights abuses, combating drug trafficking, countering terrorist activities, or encouraging behavioral changes in sanctioned entities.These sanctions and export controls significantly impact international trade.
