Part I – Summary of Classification
This class is accountable for facilitating learning, academic achievement and personal development by providing instruction to students. The teacher develops and implements curriculum and lesson plans, utilizes technology to facilitate learning, and understands the varying learning styles and needs of a diverse student population.
Part II – Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A. Education and Experience
* Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.
Special Requirement
* In addition to reference and fact checking, a thorough background investigation may be conducted prior to appointment.
B. Credentials
None beyond the required teaching certificate.
C. Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements
* Valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement for Art, PK–12.
* Current Motor Vehicle operator’s license may be required.
D. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Considerable knowledge of core curriculum areas and specialized knowledge in art.
* Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods, best practices, and current research.
* Knowledge of child development, classroom management, instructional technologies, learner outcomes, and learning theory.
* Knowledge of multicultural and inclusive curriculum concepts, PBIS, and SRBI.
* Knowledge of community resources.
* Skills in classroom management, organization, presentation, human relations, mediation, conflict management, interpersonal interactions, and report development.
* Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, staff, administration, and diverse community members.
* Ability to adapt teaching styles and apply PBIS/SRBI principles.
* Effective communication orally and in writing.
* Evaluation and presentation of student performance to foster achievement.
* Multitasking and flexibility.
* Planning and implementation of lesson plans aligned with district and school goals.
* Provision of appropriate instruction in core subjects.
* Utilization of computer and multimedia technology.

Part III – Position Supervises
* May direct the work of paraprofessionals.
Part IV – Essential Functions
* Advise, assist, and supervise students with internships, volunteering, community service projects, and competitions; secure training stations and employment.
* Evaluate student performance using examinations, assignments; maintain required records; submit reports and assess academic, behavioral, and vocational needs.
* Implement district, school, and program goals and standards; develop, adapt, and update curriculum; develop and implement lesson plans.
* Maintain communication with parents; schedule and hold conferences; recruit and enroll students; maintain classroom databases.
* Participate in staff development, professional growth activities, in-service events; mentor new teachers.
* Perform classroom management duties; enforce school rules; take disciplinary action; ensure safety; maintain learning environment.
* Perform other duties related to health, hygiene, co‑curricular activities, bus and lunch duty; attend meetings; serve on committees; monitor budgets and grant writing; develop student performances.
* Provide instruction in core and age‑appropriate curriculum; assess initial knowledge; use instructional resources and technologies; develop activities; order materials; collaborate with staff; provide remediation; maintain equipment; team‑teach as appropriate.
* For special needs students, determine least restrictive environment; assist with due process reports and IEPs; coordinate mainstreaming; participate in planning and placement teams.
* Perform additional duties as requested.
Part V – Working Conditions, Physical and Mental Requirements
Employees must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity to perform job duties. A physical examination may be required.
Physical demands may include lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., standing and walking, using tools and equipment, handling environmental hazards, and responding to medical emergencies.
Environmental conditions may involve working in classrooms or workshops with varying temperatures, noise levels, and exposure to chemicals or dust.
