This Position reports to:
R&D Unit Lead
In this role you will lead and support the R&D Power Electronics and Components team within our Global Competence Center in Switzerland. You will focus on the design and development of ABB’sMedium Voltage Drivesused across diverse industries such as marine, renewables, and metals. As part of the R&D management team, you will ensure technical excellence, ensure delivery on project targets, and collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to advance ourhigh-power converter technologies.
The work model for the role is: hybrid #LI-hybrid.
This role is contributing to division Motion System Drives in Switzerland.
You will be mainly accountable for:
* Leading and supporting the R&D Power Electronics and Components team by setting clear targets, managing performance, encouraging team spirit, and ensuring effective collaboration,knowledge sharing, andcontinuous development.
* Driving and overseeing internal processes, including resource and competency planning,cost center budgeting, and monitoring of R&D project activities to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of results.
* Providing direct technical guidance in the design, development, validation, and qualification of high-power converter hardware, ensuring compliance with quality, reliability, and safety standards throughout the product lifecycle.
* Collaborating closely with product and project managers by contributing to effort estimations, development strategies, and innovation projects, while shaping technology and product roadmaps and securing intellectual property.
Qualifications for the role
* You possess a solid academic qualification, such as an MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent knowledge, with a experience in high-power electronics and a focus on Medium Voltage converter hardware design and application.
* You have in-depth experience in developing and testing Power Electronic Building Blocks (e.g., IGBT and IGCT modules/stacks), covering all stages from conceptual design using analytical andsimulation toolsto specification, qualification, and certification.
* You are well-versed in designing and validating complete power drive systems, with an understanding of electrical, thermal, andmechanical requirementsacross subsystems and full converter modules.
* You demonstrate effective leadership capabilities, with the ability to motivate a highly skilled R&D team.
* You bring solidproject managementskills and are comfortable coordinating cross-functional efforts, managing priorities, and delivering results under budget and time constraints.
* You are motivated by applied research and development, with a structured, self-organized, and pragmatic approach to problem-solving and innovation.
* You communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken; German language skills are a valuable asset.
