Overview
The Esri R&D Center-Zurich is seeking skilled and creative interns to work on challenging projects that consist of the research and development of early-stage prototype software or methods (several interesting work topics are available). These internships are a great opportunity to gain professional work experience in a leading-edge technology environment. This is a five- or six-month full-time, paid internship available with two weeks of vacation.
What We Do
At the Esri R&D Center-Zurich, we develop web, desktop, and game engine-based software applications for GIS (Geographic Information System), urban planning, and architectural design. The applications are 3D graphics heavy, and their CI/CD setups include intricate system tests, such as screenshot testing. The CI/CD runs on top of an in-house DevOps platform-as-a-service (PaaS), which integrates with a global infrastructure that allows us to deliver high-quality software to millions of users.

Responsibilities
Select or define a focused internship project in the area of 3D Web GIS (spatial analysis, web cartography, web apps), or UI/UX design
Research the state of the art on the topic and study real-world use cases
Propose a design and work plan and discuss it with your supervisor and colleagues
Start implementing the work plan and share results with the team as you go
Document the finished work, make showcase videos, and present it to the team.
Optional: contribute to the daily development tasks in one of our Scrum product teams (as additional side track)
Requirements
Experience with web development
Background in UI/UX design
Interest in (contributing to) open source
Self-initiative, responsible, self-controlled, and self-motivating
Good verbal and written skills in English and/or German
BSc or MSc in computer science, architecture, GIS, or UI/UX design (completion or final year of study)
Existing work authorization for Switzerland
Recommended Qualifications
Experience with Esri's ArcGIS product suite
Interest in street design, urban planning, civil engineering, or architecture.
