Role Summary
Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Idiap Research Institute seeks two PhD students to work in the general area of generative modeling using spiking networks.
Spiking networks are neural networks designed with dynamics much closer to biological networks than their conventional counterparts; information is typically represented and communicated as sequences of impulses.
The project will follow two related threads: In a first thread, we will investigate the mathematical relationship between spiking and the diffusion that is common for current generative models. In a second thread, we will investigate the interface between the (binary) spikes and the continuous signals normally required for the generative applications. In general, it being an expertise of the lab, we will use speech synthesis as the application; speech has a natural time dimension that lends itself to spiking approaches, demonstrated by previous work in the lab on speech recognition. Post description
Each candidate should have a masters (or good bachelors) degree in physics, mathematics or engineering. Computer science may also be appropriate, but be aware that the notions of ordinary and statistical differential equations will be important. Programming skills will also be important, as will machine learning and statistics.
The positions are fully funded for four years, contingent on steady progress, and are expected to lead to a PhD dissertation. Selected candidates will be enrolled as doctoral students at EPFL, subject to acceptance by the Electrical Engineering Doctoral School (EDEE) ( The anticipated start date is in the autumn of, with salaries according to EPFL standards.
Screening of applications will begin on June,, and will continue until the positions are filled.
