PostDoc in Sociotechnical Research for Digital Spatial Planning 80-100% (f/m/d)
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, part of the ETH Domain, employs approximately 600 staff dedicated to sustainable environmental use, protection, and natural hazard management.
The Land Change Science research unit studies landscape change patterns, causes, and processes. The Land-Use Systems group offers a position within the DISCLOSE project for a duration of two years (with the possibility of extension), starting as soon as possible.
Project Overview
Driven by digitalization, spatial planning is experiencing disruption, reshaping how values like equity, transparency, and efficiency are planned and delivered. The DISCLOSE project, funded by an SNSF advanced grant, aims to understand the impacts of digital transformation on planning processes. Your role involves analyzing pathways through which private sector technology companies digitize planning, focusing on major software providers and international consultancy firms. You will conduct expert interviews and document analysis to gain insights into standardization, globalization, and public-private interactions, and collaborate with the team to develop a theoretical model of digitalization's influence on spatial planning.
Candidate Profile
* PhD in science and technology studies (STS), urban planning, spatial planning, or a related field.
* Strong qualitative social science skills and knowledge of digitalization processes and actors.
* Knowledge of European spatial planning is advantageous.
* Good publication record relative to career stage.
* Interest in theory development and working in an interdisciplinary, international environment.
* Proficiency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of German and other European languages is a plus.
