About the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)
PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting‑edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. About one quarter of our staff are post‑docs, post‑graduates or apprentices. PSI employs about 2,300 people.
About Muoniverse
Muoniverse is a Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) dedicated to advancing muon science across particle physics, quantum materials, and applications ranging from energy research to cultural heritage. It brings together 30 research teams from universities, research institutions and museums in a highly collaborative network, supported by the Muoniverse Research School, which coordinates training, exchanges and career development for PhD students and postdocs.

Position: Postdoctoral Fellow in Experimental Physics
Posted: 31.03.2026
Responsibilities
In close collaboration with a team of experts at PSI and the University of Zurich, the postdoc candidate together with a PhD candidate will work towards a substantial extension of the high‑pressure capabilities of μSR at PSI. The goal is to enable measurements on dramatically smaller samples at significantly higher pressures using diamond anvil cells and advanced uniaxial stress apparatus. The postdoc will contribute to the development of novel hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure cells and associated experimental methodologies, increasing the accessible pressure range by at least a factor of three beyond current world records at PSI. These advances will open previously inaccessible regimes of quantum matter and enable the investigation of emergent phenomena under extreme conditions. In a team of principal investigators, postdocs and PhD students, the candidate will work on tuning and understanding unconventional quantum phenomena such as superconductivity, charge order, and magnetism in a variety of quantum materials, aiming to identify common features in their phase diagrams and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The research will be carried out in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment at PSI.
Qualifications
* PhD degree in Experimental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics or a closely related field
* Strong expertise in quantum materials research or experience with uniaxial and/or hydrostatic pressure techniques would be an advantage
* Experience with μSR or other magnetic resonance techniques would be an advantage
* Strong motivation to work on an interdisciplinary project combining instrument development, experimental and theoretical work
* Proficiency in written and spoken English
* Ability to work effectively as part of an international research team
Benefits
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from systematic training on the job, personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. The employment contract will initially be limited to 2 years.
