The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. We conduct cutting-edge research in future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamental sciences. Our work aims to develop sustainable solutions for major societal, scientific, and economic challenges. PSI is dedicated to training future generations, with about a quarter of our staff being post-docs, post-graduates, or apprentices. PSI employs approximately 2,300 people.
PhD Student
We are seeking a PhD student to join the Nanodiffraction Group, focusing on developing a novel imaging technique called low-energy electron holography. This technique will be applied to atomic-resolution imaging of 2D crystals such as graphene and nanocrystalline samples like individual macromolecules.
Project Tasks
* Designing and constructing a coherent low-energy electron microscope
* Preparing samples and recording holograms
* Numerical reconstruction of the sample structure
* Presenting results at conferences and publishing papers
Your Profile
* Master's degree in physics or engineering
* Solid knowledge of solid-state physics, coherent optics, and theoretical physics (quantum mechanics, QED)
* Experience in experimental physics
* Programming skills in Matlab and Python; experience with electron microscopy and optical imaging is a plus
What We Offer
Join an interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic team. We provide systematic on-the-job training, personal development opportunities, and a strong vocational training culture. Our modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure support work-life balance and personal interests.
