The mission of the Instrumentation Division is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.
We seek a motivated Senior ASIC Design Engineer to develop Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) for Silicon Vertex and Tracking (SVT) detectors used in collider experiments such as FCCee and ePIC at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The initial work location for this role will be CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, for the first year.
In this role, you will design, develop, and build analog, digital, and mixed-mode circuits for MAPS that integrate radiation sensors and readout electronics on the same substrate, primarily for tracking relativistic charged particles. You will also be involved in developing other ASICs for BNL and partner instruments. Collaboration with scientists, engineers, and technical team members across divisions and institutions is essential. Candidates with broad ASIC design expertise, especially in MAPS technology and radiation sensors, are preferred.
Our challenges include developing ASICs for particle detectors, high-resolution spectrometers, photon counters, and imagers, often in extreme environments such as cryogenic temperatures or high irradiation doses. Our R&D also extends into Electro-Photonics, Quantum Information Science, AI & Machine Learning, and Neuromorphic Processing, with applications globally.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Create innovative solutions and lead the adoption of novel microelectronics technologies, especially for MAPS, contributing to silicon vertex and tracking detectors.
2. Lead the design of analog, digital, or mixed-mode ASICs for scientific instruments.
3. Develop design specifications based on theoretical analysis and application needs, overseeing complex design activities and team efforts.
4. Design circuits using schematic and layout tools in environments like Cadence.
5. Create models of circuit components and perform full-custom or RTL-based ASIC design implementation.
6. Build test-benches and conduct mixed analog-digital circuit simulations.
7. Lead project documentation, test-board design, and laboratory testing.
8. Engage in co-design of ASICs and sensors, exploring emerging technologies like machine learning and quantum science.
9. Initiate new projects and proposals utilizing emerging technologies.
