PhD student for Computational Methods in Dense Coulomb Clouds

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. The Accelerator Simulation and Advanced Modeling Group is looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD Student to investigate the fundamental physics of Dense Coulomb Clouds (CCs). This project combines state-of-the-art numerical modelling with experimental validation at leading facilities like Argonne National Laboratory, SwissFEL and EuPRAXIA.

Your tasks

* Develop and implement advanced computational models to simulate the evolution of CCs, incorporating particle-to-particle interactions and collisional effects, spanning from the classical relativistic regime into quantum
* Analyse simulation results and experimental data to understand the impact of density perturbations, thermalisation, and entropy on beam properties
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers

Your profile

* Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computational Science and Engineering
* Strong computational skills including HPC, particle-in-cell methods
* Knowledge of Kokkos is and additional benefit
* Good knowledge of plasma and quantum physics incl. correlated systems
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
* Strong communication and writing skills
