Patients with a narrowing of the cervical spine (spinal canal stenosis) may suffer damage to the spinal cord. This can cause pain, sensory disturbances, paralysis and limitations in walking or bladder function.
Despite very similar images in MRI examinations, such narrowings cause major problems in some patients and only minor or no problems in others. The reason for this is not yet fully understood.
As part of a clinical study at Balgrist University Hospital, neurophysiological examinations (contact heat evoked potentials) are used to determine functional impairment of various nerve pathways that can occur as a result of narrowing of the spinal cord. Abnormalities may already be apparent here, even if the patients show very few symptoms. The measurements are included in the clinical assessment. However, it is not yet known how the test results change over time after surgery or in people who do not undergo surgery, and whether the measurements can help to identify patients in whom the disease will progress.
We hope that this study will provide new insights into the course of electrophysiological measurements after surgery and in people who do not undergo surgery. In addition, the value of the measurements as prognostic markers will be examined. These findings will then be used to improve the treatment of this disease.

Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated student in health sciences (HEST, medicine, biology). You should be sociable, able to work independently and interested in learning new things. Native German speaker and fluent English are required. Basic statistical knowledge is an advantage. No special prior knowledge is necessary.
