For our client, we are currently looking for a Senior AI Research Scientist
THE CLIENT
Our client is a tech-bio startup that develops cutting-edge AI methods in genome, protein and large language models to accelerate drug discovery and translational medicine. Due to their rapid growth they are looking to expand their Data/AI Engineering team Basel, Zurich and Lausanne.
YOUR ROLE:
We are looking for a highly proactive, experienced, and impactful Senior AI Research Scientist to drive foundational and applied research within the clients cutting-edge Large Language Model (LLM) platform. This pivotal role is central to ensuring the client and his engineering teams remain at the forefront of the rapidly evolving AI landscape, particularly in its application to scientific reasoning and discovery.
You will be responsible for leading critical research projects, identifying, evaluating, and championing the adoption of the latest AI research developments, tools, and methodologies. Your work will directly contribute to evolving core competencies and technologies, maintaining industry-leading competitive edge in the scientific reasoning process and beyond.
YOUR TASKS:
AI Research & Innovation Leadership
Lead high-impact AI research projects and contribute to the planning, execution, and dissemination of research focused on advancing domain-specific LLMs.
Collaborate closely with the CTO and CSO to define strategic research priorities and contribute actively to the overarching research roadmap.
Staying Ahead of AI Advancements
Monitor, synthesize, and evaluate emerging AI/ML research, particularly in Large Language Models (LLMs), reinforcement learning (RL) including Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF), natural language processing, and their novel applications in scientific domains.
Develop systematic approaches for identifying new AI tools, libraries, pre-trained models, and foundational research papers for their potential impact and applicability to our mission.
Translate complex research findings into actionable insights and concrete recommendations for the engineering and product development teams.
Ensuring Technological Relevance and Innovation
Champion the strategic integration of promising new AI technologies and methodologies into platforms and workflows to continuously enhance competitive advantage.
Initiate and lead pilot projects and proof-of-concepts to validate the utility and feasibility of novel AI approaches for challenges in scientific publishing, peer review, and scientific insight generation.
Advanced AI Modeling and Application
Design and implement experiments for the development and fine-tuning of LLMs specifically tailored for complex tasks in immunology, biotechnology, and drug discovery, enabling breakthroughs in Artificial Research Intelligence (ARI).
Develop and apply evaluation frameworks for scientific LLMs, ensuring high-quality outputs and reliable performance.
Drive the implementation and optimization of reinforcement learning (RL) and RLHF techniques.
Collaboration and Communication
Foster interdisciplinary collaboration between AI research, engineering, product, and domain expert teams to ensure research translates effectively into tangible product advancements.
Effectively communicate complex AI research findings, emerging trends, and their strategic implications to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Facilitate the publication of high-quality research in top-tier AI/ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR) and leading scientific journals, representing the client at scientific conferences and workshops to build our brand and reputation.
REQUIREMENTS
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computational Biology, or a closely related highly technical field.
3-5 years of post-doctoral or industry experience in AI/ML research.
Experience in leading research projects or providing significant mentorship to junior researchers, interns, or students.
Strong publication record in leading AI/ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, MLHC) or highly relevant scientific journals
Experience with current Large Language Model (LLM) architectures, pre-training and fine-tuning techniques (e.g., LoRA, QLoRA, full fine-tuning), and comprehensive evaluation methodologies for LLMs.
Proficiency in Python and experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Knowledge of advanced techniques for domain adaptation, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), few-shot learning, and Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting.
Strong academic background or practical exposure to immunology, biotechnology, drug discovery, or the broader scientific research process is a distinct advantage.
