Ion Beam Systems Technical Engineer (SY-STI-LP-2025-172-LD)
Contract
At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter—fundamental particles made to collide at near light speed. This research provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction
Are you a practical, hands-on, curious technical engineer? Would you like to contribute to nuclear science and the fight against cancer by supporting the production of rare nuclei and radioisotopes? Working with cutting-edge laser systems and isotope mass separators at CERN-MEDICIS and ISOLDE, you will produce the purest beams of radioisotopes for targeted cancer therapies, medical research, and fundamental sciences.
You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), responsible for beam-related technical systems of CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build, and operate equipment across all CERN accelerators and engage in advanced R&D programs.
You will be part of the Lasers and Photocathodes Section (SY-STI-LP), which manages laser installations and optical beam lines used to produce charged particle beams in CERN's research facilities, including operation of the RILIS and MELISSA laser ion sources and the MEDICIS isotope separator.
Functions
As an electro-mechanical technical engineer for ion beam production, your responsibilities include operating and maintaining laser and optical systems, as well as mass separators used to produce radioactive ion beams at CERN-MEDICIS and ISOLDE.
* Operate, maintain, and support the MEDICIS mass separator and high-power laser systems according to experimental schedules.
* Coordinate machine interventions, monitor performance, and handle radioactive samples, ensuring radiological safety compliance.
* Develop and implement automation systems for beam tuning and laser optimization.
* Maintain and update technical documentation, including procedures, schematics, and safety files.
* Participate in equipment upgrades, infrastructure projects, and hands-on mechanical and electrical interventions.
* Provide technical updates during coordination meetings.
* Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and engage in continuous training and development tailored to your experience.
Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in electromechanics, photonics engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
Required experience
* Hands-on experience operating in an accelerator or similar large-scale technical environment (vacuum, cryogenic, radiation).
* Strong practical skills in mechanical assembly, integration, or maintenance.
* Ability to manage technical documentation and system specifications to professional standards.
* Interest or experience with tunable high-power laser systems, including alignment and maintenance.
Desired experience
* Familiarity with mechatronics, quality control, system validation, and project management methodologies.
* Experience working with radioactive materials and understanding safety protocols.
* Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems.
* Experience with experimental facilities and accelerator performance optimization.
* Mechanical assembly skills and technical contract management.
* Strong organizational skills, teamwork, flexibility, problem-solving, and knowledge sharing abilities.
Proficiency in spoken and written English is required, with a commitment to learn French.
Eligibility and Closing Date:
CERN values diversity and encourages applications from all Member and Associate Member States. The position will be filled as soon as possible; applications should be submitted by 14.09.2025 at 23:59 CEST.
Employment Conditions
* Limited duration contract (5 years), with potential to apply for an indefinite position.
* 40 hours per week, with participation in stand-by duty, work in radiation areas, and shift work as needed.
* Requires a valid driving license and medical clearance due to occupational health risks.
