PhD Student in AI-boost multimodality imaging for upright radiotherapy
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We conduct cutting-edge research in future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamental sciences. Committed to training future generations, about a quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates, or apprentices. PSI employs approximately 2,300 people.
For the Center for Proton Therapy, we are seeking a PhD student for a fully funded 3-year position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network - UPLIFT, focusing on upright radiotherapy (RT)—a transformative approach to radiation treatment. This role (DC16) involves developing a comprehensive multi-modality image-guided workflow for upright radiotherapy, establishing treatment planning, robustness, and margin guidelines based on upright imaging data and numerical phantoms.
Your tasks
* Develop a versatile image analysis framework (including image segmentation, deformable registration, synthesis, and reconstruction) for multi-modality, multi-posture images used in upright radiotherapy;
* Generate anthropomorphic numerical (4D) phantoms to simulate upright anatomy and its variations;
* Design and validate an efficient multi-modal image guidance workflow for upright radiotherapy/proton therapy.
More information about the UPLIFT consortium can be found here.
Your profile
* Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields;
* Strong interest in radiotherapy, medical imaging, image analysis, and translational research;
* Proven experience in medical image analysis (registration, segmentation, 4D motion modeling) and deep learning frameworks is highly preferred;
* Excellent communication and writing skills, with ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
You will be matriculated at ETH Zurich. Applicants must not have resided or carried out main activities in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately prior to the recruitment date.
We offer
Our institution promotes interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic on-the-job training, personal development opportunities, and a strong vocational training culture. We support work-life balance through modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure.
