PART I - SUMMARY OF CLASSIFICATION

This class is accountable for providing instruction and other educational supports such as case management to special needs students and assisting them in their academic and social development.


PART II - MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

* A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
o ✔ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
* B. CREDENTIALS (none listed).
* C. LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
o Employment is conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement(s) appropriate to the teaching assignment.
o Comprehensive Special Education, K‑12 – 165 endorsement.
o Incumbents may be required to possess a current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License.
* D. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
o Complete all State CEU requirements for re‑certification.
* E. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
o Considerable knowledge of current best practices, laws (including due process and IDEA), and interventions regarding the education of special needs students.
o Knowledge of specific disabilities, common child mental health disorders, and appropriate strategies/interventions.
o Knowledge of child development, educational philosophy, teaching methods, and research‑based practices.
o Knowledge of educational testing, learning theory, and students’ learning styles and needs.
o Knowledge of PBIS and SRBI.
o Skills: accommodations for visual impairments, classroom and behavior management, interpersonal relations, organization, communication, assistive technology use, and transitional service planning.
o Ability to apply PBIS and SRBI principles, be flexible to meet student needs, create a structured environment, develop curriculum and lesson plans, assess and integrate data, teach diverse learners, and provide job coaching for transition activities.


PART III - POSITION SUPERVISES

May provide work direction to paraprofessionals and clericals as assigned.


PART IV - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Attend various meetings (staff, building, parent, team, and case management).
* Communicate and provide consultation with team members, parents, guardians, and outside agencies regarding students, interventions, medications, and programmatic needs.
* Develop and manage data collection systems, analyze data, identify student needs, and recommend classes.
* Create and use assessment tools and progress reports.
* Build positive, trusting relationships with students; provide counseling, transition activities, and job coaching.
* Adapt and implement curriculum and lesson plans aligned with standards.
* Ensure least restrictive environment and best practices for teams.
* Handle transportation issues and serve as contact for student problems on buses.
* Participate in staff development.
* Provide direct instruction using individualized, lecture, team teaching, hands‑on, and other strategies.
* Manage student behavior, implement disciplinary procedures, assist with individualized intervention plans, and model strategies for staff.
* Ensure student safety during weather, transport, and on school grounds.
* Work with IEP teams to develop plans, manage IEPs, write goals, and host conferences.
* Order supplies and materials related to curriculum and instruction.
* Provide in‑service training to other staff.
* Serve as case manager for transition planning at middle and high school levels.
* Assist hearing‑impaired students itinerantly.
* Perform other related duties as required.


PART V - WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and hearing and vision acuity. A physical examination may be required.
