Department: Operational Transformation and Resiliency
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is seeking an Operational Risk Manager to join our Operational Transformation & Resiliency team within Risk Management.
This role is based in Basel, Switzerland however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.
Please note that this role is offered as a 3-year fixed-term contract.
Purpose of the role:
Join our team and play a vital role in ensuring the BIS’s operational risk management supports our mission to serve central banks and promote global financial stability. You will support the implementation of qualitative elements of operational risk, contributing to risk reporting, control assessments, and scenario analysis. You will contribute and lead efforts to enrich and expand the Bank’s approach to risk management adapting to changes in the risk landscape. Your work will involve managing a centralized internal loss database and shaping key risk indicators to enhance decision-making. Principal accountabilities:
Framework Development
Enhance operational risk frameworks, tools, and policies.
Support IT tools for risk data and workflows, ensuring quality and training users.
Promote Three Lines of Defence (3LOD) practices and a strong risk culture.
Conduct risk and control assessments (RCAs).
Define risk appetite, control standards, and priorities.
Adapt policies for new products and services.
Oversee risk assessments, incident follow-ups, and action plans.
Coordinate key activities like model validation and risk capital calculations.
Monitoring & Reporting
Track and report risk conditions and incidents.
Maintain a centralized loss database and prepare risk reports for senior management.
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
University degree, preferably in finance, business or economics, or the equivalent gained through professional experience.
Relevant working experience in risk management, audit, or compliance in a major financial institution, central bank or international financial institution, preferably with a focus on operational risk or third party risk management or AI related risk management
Demonstrated understanding of issues relating to operational risk measurement, management and control.
Excellent written and oral self-expression in English.
Personal initiative, ability to work independently and to meet tight deadlines, organisational skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
