PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Sailor Trainer is responsible for training and assessing Viking Sailors and Sailors Light in all practical deck duties, ensuring they understand, apply, and maintain required skills and safety standards in daily operations.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Sailor Trainer is part of the Viking College Maritime team and reports to the Nautical Instructor Team Leader. The role focuses on delivering, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating practical sailor training. This is a field-based position that requires regular travel, up to 90%, to training locations and Viking Longships across Europe, primarily in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Hungary.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Training Delivery and Mentoring
* Deliver and maintain sailor training in line with Viking’s Training programs.
* Main training topics include :
* Mooring Operations : mooring procedures in different conditions and locations; use of anchors, cranes, and winches. both Hercules steel wire and modern lightweight mooring lines (e.g., Timm Acera Amundsen); tying and securing all standard nautical knots (bowline, clove hitch, double sheet bend, figure eight, round turn with two half hitches).
* Deck and Maintenance :
* Maintenance work, cleaning, painting, and storage management. Correct use of brushes, paints, cleaning materials, and chemicals. Correct flag handling. Putting down railings and furniture for passages under low bridges.
* Guest-Facing Operations :
* The setup of gangways using the outer crane and proper lines. Luggage handling procedures during embarkation and disembarkation. setting up the Sundeck.
* Navigational Duties :
* Assisting with wheelhouse operations: communication of distances, positioning during maneuvers, and coordination with the navigating officer.
* Mentor and support Sailors and Sailor Lights throughout their training journey. Create a supportive and motivating learning atmosphere that encourages growth, confidence, and professionalism among trainees.
Program Coordination
* Prepare and maintain training materials, equipment, and tools.
* Coordinate training plans, schedules, and resources with internal teams and external partners.
* Update and adjust training content as needed to reflect operational practices and safety standards.
* Coordinate onboard training sessions.
* Document attendance and progress.
* Conduct and support internal and external Boatman exams.
* Perform ad-hoc tasks as assigned.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
* Minimum five years of experience in inland navigation as Second Officer, Boatsman, or a similar role.
* Proven experience leading mooring and maneuvering operations, ideally on a Viking Longship.
* Strong practical knowledge of deck equipment, mooring systems, cranes, anchors, maintenance tasks, and nautical knots.
* Valid Sailor’s Book (Blue Book).
* Fluent in English; additional languages such as German, Dutch, or French are an asset.
* Strong communication and mentoring skills, with a patient and supportive teaching approach.
EDUCATION
Completed nautical education and proven qualification as a Sailor in inland navigation. Additional certification or teaching experience in maritime training is an asset.
