Title: Payroll Manager

About Madrigal:

Madrigal is a biopharmaceutical company focused on delivering novel therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a liver disease with high unmet medical need. Madrigal’s medication is a once-daily, oral, liver-directed THR-β agonist designed to target key underlying causes of MASH. This is the first and only medication approved by both the FDA and European Commission for the treatment of MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis (F2 to F3). An ongoing Phase 3 outcomes trial is evaluating our medication for the treatment of compensated MASH cirrhosis (F4c).


Position Responsibilities

Hands‑on International Payroll Manager within Finance (Payroll Accounting & Operations). Own the end‑to‑end EU payroll cycle across multiple entities with the support of external payroll service providers. Operate effectively in a non‑integrated landscape using robust, file‑based controls. This role requires broad payroll knowledge across European jurisdictions and the ability to adapt between countries and providers in a start‑up environment

* End‑to‑End Ownership: Maintain the payroll calendar, submission windows, and approval checkpoints; drive monthly reviews, approvals, and sign‑offs across multiple entities.
* Multi‑Provider Coordination: Harmonize outputs from different local offices/providers; review calculations, oversee corrections/reruns, ensure consistency of templates and deliverables, and monitor SLAs.
* Review & Controls: Build concise entity review packs; perform variance analysis (MoM, headcount/FTE, gross‑to‑net, employer costs), verify statutory rates/caps, and retain complete evidence for audit and close.
* Payroll Accounting: Standardize journal entries and GL mappings; calculate and post accruals (salary, bonus, PTO, 13th month, social taxes); complete balance‑sheet reconciliations and provide clear flux explanations.
* Payments & Funding: Own the payment approval file and calendar; coordinate funding and statutory remittances (taxes, social security, pension); track status to ensure on‑time execution.
* Data Flows & Systems: Design standard, controlled, file‑based interfaces (templates, control totals, reconciliation bridges) to connect non‑integrated HR systems, providers, and the ERP.
* RFP & Operating Model: Lead on the international RFP to evaluate models; define scope, selection criteria, SLAs, control framework, implementation plan, and manage transition.


Qualifications and Skills Required

* Startup/scale-up builder mindset: this is a new role - design and implement processes, controls, calendars, templates, and interfaces from the ground up.
* Bachelor’s in Accounting / Finance / related field.
* 7–10+ years international payroll and payroll accounting across multiple EU jurisdictions and entities.
* Proven success operating with external payroll service providers and harmonizing outputs from different local offices.
* Comfortable in non-integrated environments; experience with Excel/Power Query to design controlled, repeatable, file-based processes.
* Strong IFRS/GAAP grounding; good knowledge journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and close support.
* Clear, concise communicator and strong collaborator - able to align stakeholders and external payroll providers; organized, accountable, and detail‑oriented.
