(Associate) Director, EMEA Tax Operations

We are seeking a highly experienced (Associate) Director, EMEA Tax Operations, to join our growing International Finance Team. This is a critical role for a motivated and ambitious tax professional who will be instrumental in building the operational tax infrastructure to support global growth. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of direct and indirect taxation across our European operations, including tax compliance, reporting, and risk management with the possibility of expanding as the company grows. This role requires a blend of strategic thinking and hands‑on execution, with a strong focus on operational execution in a fast‑paced evolving environment. Additionally, the candidate must be adept at collaborating across cultures, coordinating with outsourced service providers, and supporting cross‑functional teams in the US, Europe, and other international markets.

Based in Zug, Switzerland, this role will report to the US‑based Executive Director, Tax and collaborate closely with local accounting, finance, legal teams, along with other business functions to ensure integrated tax solutions that align with Madrigal’s global business and compliance goals. This is a high‑impact role at the forefront of Madrigal’s international expansion. The final level/title will be determined based on experience.

Position Responsibilities:
* Manage corporate income tax, VAT/GST, Intrastat, and withholding tax compliance across European jurisdictions, ensuring timely and accurate filings in all jurisdictions and reviewing outputs from external tax advisers.
* Manage European corporate income and indirect tax obligations, including quarterly estimates, annual filings, and audit inquiries. Maintain the regional compliance tracker and ensure all filings and payments are timely.
* Lead and prepare the quarterly and annual tax provisions under IFRS and/or US GAAP, in partnership with local accounting teams.
* Responsible for all international monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reconciliations for income and indirect tax.
* Collaborate with the accounting team to ensure adherence to regional transfer pricing policies, and support transfer pricing audits as needed.
* Lead and coordinate responses to tax audits and inquiries across international jurisdictions.
* Establish and maintain strong internal tax controls, ensuring compliance with corporate documentation, reporting, and policy.
* Monitor changes in international tax laws and regulations and assess their impact on the company.
* Monitor and assess the impact of global tax developments, including OECD BEPS 2.0 and Pillar Two rules, ensuring compliance readiness and advising on implications for tax strategy.
* Collaborate with the Executive Director, Tax, International Finance, and external advisors to develop and execute global tax strategies to minimize tax liabilities and support business objectives.
* Collaborate with local accounting, finance, and legal teams to ensure alignment of tax strategies with broader organizational goals.
* Serve as the subject matter expert on EMEA tax matters, providing guidance to stakeholders across the company.
* Manage and coordinate all external tax service providers, ensuring quality, accuracy, and compliance with service‑level agreements.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
* Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field; professional tax certification (e.g., CTA, Swiss Certified Tax Expert, ADIT, CPA) strongly preferred.
* Minimum of 10 years of corporate tax experience, with a mix of public accounting and multinational corporate tax roles.
* Strong technical knowledge of Swiss and European tax laws, and international tax principles.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment.
* Excellent communication and cultural sensitivity to collaborate across global teams.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and drive process improvements.
* Strong understanding of US GAAP and tax accounting principles.
* Proven ability to manage complex tax compliance and reporting processes over several jurisdictions.
* Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a strategic mindset.
* Fluency in English is required; proficiency in one or more additional European languages (e.g., German, French, Dutch) is highly preferred.
* Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry is a plus.
* Requires limited travel, 5‑10% for business meetings.
