Job Description

Introduction

Are you an enthusiastic engineer interested in advanced electromagnet technology and particle accelerators? At CERN, the most advanced electromagnets in the world are at the heart of every accelerator - and will play an important role in future developments. Come and join a great team pushing the limits of this technology. Take part!

In the within CERN’s, we design, build, and support the operation of all beam line magnets in the CERN accelerator complex, both normal and superconducting. develops cutting-edge tools for mathematical field modelling, computation, precision magnetic measurements and material characterization.

As an Accelerator Magnet Modelling Engineer, you will advance, validate, and apply modelling tools and techniques to optimise the design and performance of CERN’s accelerator magnets.

Functions

As an Accelerator Magnet Modelling Engineer you will:

1. Develop and validate analytical and numerical models and tools to represent magnetic fields in accelerator magnets and magnetic devices and analyse related measurement data, in collaboration with magnet designers and measurement experts;
2. Maintain, support and develop software applications and frameworks for the design of resistive and superconducting accelerator magnets, ensuring long-term usability and integration with CERN’s engineering processes;
3. Develop and implement model-based methods and tools to improve the accuracy and consistency of magnetic field results obtained from complementary sources, such as mathematical models, multiple magnetic sensors and beam diagnostics;
4. Prepare technical documentation, reports and training material for modelling and analysis tools of accelerator magnets;
5. Contribute to the metrological characterisation of magnets and associated instrumentation, in view of validating the developed models.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

Proven experience in the computer-assisted design and modelling of resistive or superconducting accelerator magnets or related electromechanical devices, using specialised numerical simulation tools.

Experience in the following would be an asset:

6. Construction, testing or operation of electromagnets;
7. Magnetic measurement techniques, including integrating and analysing measurement data against numerical models.

Technical competencies:

8. Knowledge and application of computational methods and tools in electromagnetism: such as FEM or BEM approaches applied to low-frequency magnetic problems;
9. Design and modelling of normal conducting magnets and permanent magnet systems;
10. Development of application software: related to electromagnetic simulation;
11. Measurement and analysis of magnets.

Behavioural competencies:

12. Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities;
13. Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting;
14. Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises;
15. Learning and Sharing Knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer;
16. Demonstrating Flexibility: being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Additional Information

Eligibility and closing date:

has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organisation. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all .

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 13.10.2026 at 23:59 CEST.
