ARMED SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICER/RESIDENCY OFFICER
QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid State of NJ Permit to Carry a Handgun for Retired Law Enforcement Officers
Possession of a valid Retired Pollice Officer Identification Card
Possession of a valid NJ Driver’s License
Annual certification of good health signed by licensed physician to include certification for physician that applicant can perform the duties of this job description. Submission to substance abuse screening and random testing.
Knowledge of rules and regulations of the school district and the laws of the City of Garfield and ability to perform assigned duties.
Interest in working with all students and establishing positive relationships with administration, staff, and students.
Demonstrate attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to establish and maintain successful relationships and collaborate with all members of the educational community.
Demonstrated knowledge of laws and regulations regarding child welfare.
Maintains confidentiality as required and appropriate
Demonstrate strong computer skills, a working knowledge of computer systems including video management system (VMS), student database system, the internet, excel, word processing, etc.
Effective problem-solving, human relations and communication skills.
Must have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative
Bilingual preferred
Required criminal history check and proof of
U.S. citizenship or resident alien status.
Knowledge of child welfare and compusory education laws and regulations and minimum experience as determined by the Board.
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with children and adults, and sensitivity to cultural diversity.

JOB GOAL
To provide security and protection for students, staff, and school property.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The duties of this job require the following physical activities: walking, sitting, standing, reaching, pulling and/or pushing, carrying, repetitive motions, speaking, listening, and visual acuity. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Comply with all the rules and regulations associated with the policy and procedures of the district and Administrative Code N.J.S.A. 2C:39:6 Retired Law Enforcement Officer Program (RPO)
Assess the situation and notify local police immediately while using best judgement to respond appropriately to protect the safety and well‑being of staff and students.
Collaborate with the Garfield Police Department and assist law enforcement officials when necessary, according to the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the school district, the Garfield Police Department and Bergen County Prosecutors Office.
Provide security and surveillance of the entire areas assigned, including school, school grounds and parking lot.
Note and report irregularities, issues with student behavior, dangerous practices, hazardous conditions, accidents, fires, and other circumstances which affect the health and welfare of students and staff to the Building Principal, Director of Security or Designee.
Escort students throughout the building when necessary.
Participate and assume responsibilities in directing staff/students during school safety drills
Takes necessary action to correct all issues in keeping with established procedures and district protocols and reports to the Building Principal, Director of Security, or designee.
Maintain control of crowds during school functions.
Insure all visitors entering the schools or on school property are properly signed in through the electronic software tracking program in accordance with established procedures and district protocols.
Announce all visitors to the appropriate staff and escort them to the desired location.
Provide general assistance to all persons, including information regarding locations, special events, regulations, provisions of the school district policy and other matters.
Check the condition of the buildings and take appropriate steps to protect them from danger and theft.
Take needed action as to suspicious persons and conditions and report significant actions, occurrences and conditions to the Building Principal, Director of Security, or designee.
Provide armed protection when large sums of money are in transit.
Administer first aid in the case of accidents or emergencies.
Prepare clear, accurate and informative reports of significant events, activities, and conditions.
Must wear district issued uniform and specified identification.
Participate in building and or district level professional development as required by the Superintendent and continually improve professional knowledge and skills related to security management.
Review video management system (VMS) and will not permit anyone to view video surveillance without the prior consent of the Building Principal, Director of Security, or designee.
Must comply with all requirements as set forth by the Standard Operations Procedure for Armed School Security Officers.
Any other duties assigned by Administration.
Maintain daily contact with all schools to monitor undocumented absences and excessive tardiness; confere with parents and make home calls when necessary.
Supervise the keeping of daily attendance registers and tardiness records.
Collate monthly attendance reports and prepare an annual report on attendance and related matters.
Confere regularly with building principals, school nurses, teachers and child study team members regarding students who are chronically absent/tardy.
Handle all court matters pertaining to attendance problems; prepare necessary reports; and attend pre-trial conferences and/or court sessions as required.
Investigate challenges to students' legal residence in accordance with law and Board policy.
Perform all duties specified in state law, administration code and in accordance with Board policy and procedures.
Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten Months - Part-Time (29.5 hours a week) pay rate is $35.00 an hour
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with NJ State law and the provisions of the board’s policy on evaluations.

Effective September 1, 2011, all employees of school districts must reside in the State of New Jersey, unless exempted under law. If you already work for the school district as of September 1, 2011, and you do not live in New Jersey, you are not required to move to New Jersey. However, if you begin your office, position, or employment on September 1, 2011 or later, you must reside in New Jersey. If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date you take your office, position, or employment to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your office, position, or employment.
