Firefighters at CERN work on a 12-hour shift system, on call 24/7. Responsibilities include emergency response, training, and maintenance activities, mainly during weekdays. CERN’s Fire and Rescue Service collaborates with emergency services from France and Switzerland for joint exercises and interventions.
Functions
After a 10-week on-the-job training, you will join your team and be responsible for:
* Emergency response: firefighting, medical emergencies, rescue operations.
* Safety Control Room: monitor and manage emergency dispatch.
* Technical inspections & patrols: safety checks and fire regulation compliance.
* Specialized assistance: confined space, hazardous materials, transport missions.
* Training & exercises: participate in drills and professional development.
* Fire prevention & awareness: safety initiatives and training.
* Equipment maintenance: firefighting and medical equipment upkeep.
* Project participation: contribute to Fire and Rescue projects.
* Administrative & operational support: administrative duties and team responsibilities.
* Physical training: participate in fitness programs.
You must hold diplomas or certificates proving your training as a firefighter, issued by a recognized public or delegated private body.
Experience
You should have demonstrated experience as a professional firefighter in a public or company fire service. Experience in control room or ambulance settings is advantageous. Your skills should include firefighting, rescue, medical response, hazardous materials handling, training, safety inspections, and firefighting operations. Flexibility, teamwork, relationship-building, accountability, and self-management are essential qualities.
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is required, with a commitment to learn the other language. CERN provides language courses for both languages.

Employment Conditions
Contract: Limited duration (up to 5 years), with possible transition to an indefinite position. Working hours: 40 hours/week.
This role involves:
o A valid C driving license.
o Participation in standby duty, including nights, Sundays, and holidays.
o Work in Radiation Areas.
o Residence near CERN facilities.
o Night, Sunday, and holiday shifts.
o Interventions in underground installations.
Medical clearance is required before contract confirmation due to occupational health risks.
