The Idiap Research Institute, in collaboration with EPFL and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, invites applications for two fully funded PhD positions in the area of generative modeling using spiking networks. Spiking networks, which more closely mimic biological neural dynamics, are of increasing interest in both theoretical and applied machine learning, with applications in speech synthesis and recognition.
The Research Will Explore
– The mathematical relationship between spiking networks and diffusion processes in current generative models.
– The interface between binary spike representations and the continuous signals required for generative applications, with a focus on speech synthesis.
Requirements
– A Master’s degree (or strong Bachelor’s) in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
– Familiarity with ordinary and statistical differential equations.
– Strong programming skills.
– Background in machine learning and statistics.
Successful candidates will enroll as doctoral students at EPFL, subject to acceptance by the Electrical Engineering Doctoral School (EDEE). Positions are fully funded for four years with salaries according to EPFL standards. The anticipated start date is autumn 2025. The working language is English.
