Survey engineer (be-gm-asg-2026-80-grap)

Genf
CERN
EUR 80’000 - EUR 100’000 pro Jahr
Inserat online seit: 29 April
Beschreibung

As a Survey Engineer you will join the Geodetic Metrology group at CERN, where you will take part in the metrology and alignment of a wide variety of components used in the particle accelerators. You will be using state‑of‑the‑art surveying tools and software to achieve the sub‑millimetre accuracy necessary to meet our goals. This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate on two major projects and contribute to the efforts of the Geodetic Metrology team in the North Area. The SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) complex is being prepared for a significant upgrade through the North Area Consolidation (NA‑CONS) and the TCC2 renovation project. As part of this renovation, you will be in charge of the dismantling of the existing beamlines and the installation of the new beamlines, scheduled for 2028/2029.

Responsibilities

Perform project follow‑up: participation in coordination meetings, schedule review and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Prepare and check the quality of inputs (theoretical beamline trajectories, installation drawing, component geometrical data).

Carry out and supervise all geometrical measurements at every stage, from assembly to on‑site installation, using standard 3D geodetic techniques such as laser tracker techniques.

Coordinate and take part in survey activities, including network measurements, installation tasks, and alignment processes, from the preparation and supervision of interventions to their execution.

Be responsible for data processing using a 3D least‑squares adjustment application, including advanced stochastic analysis, as well as preparing technical documentation and presenting results.

Define and implement a strategy for the tracing of the new beamlines and services.

Actively contribute to the group's research and development activities related to alignment monitoring systems (e.g. ATS800, robotic platforms, Universal Alignment Platform), and participate in the development, testing and maintenance of in‑house surveying software applications.

Supervise external contractors and students on technical topics.

This role includes team supervision responsibilities.

Profile

Experience in the domain of high precision geodetic or industrial metrology including the instruments and the methods used in high accuracy metrology.

Initial experience in coordination, planning, reporting and quality assurance aspects and supervision would be a plus.

Skills

Knowledge and application of high accuracy survey methods and tools: laser tracker, digital and optical levels.

Use of survey instruments as total stations and 3D laser scanning.

Knowledge and practice of standard adjustment software: theories, concepts and algorithms related to the least‑square adjustment.

Knowledge and application of data acquisition and data processing software (i.e. Python, Matlab, Spatial Analyser).

Organisation, planning and control including supervision of work.

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility Criteria

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.

You have a professional background in Geomatics, Industrial Metrology (or a related field) and have either:

a Master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of post‑graduation professional experience;

or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post‑graduation professional experience.

You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 21.05.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite

Target start date: 01‑September‑2026

Work in radiation areas

Interventions in underground installations

A valid driving licence

Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

Benefits

A monthly stipend between 6372‑7004 Swiss Francs per month (tax free) depending on your degree.

30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.

Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.

Family, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances.

A relocation package (installation grant and travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances.

Possibility to extend your contract up to 36 months.

On‑the‑job and formal training including language classes.
