Lead Engineer - High-Thrust Plasma Propulsion Systems
Fast and efficient propulsion technologies are crucial for the growing number of satellites in Low Earth Orbit and exploration of other planetary bodies. Classical chemical rockets offer high thrust but low specific impulse, requiring large amounts of fuel for small maneuvers. Traditional plasma thrusters present a trade-off: very low thrust with high specific impulse, requiring minimal propellant but providing unsuitable thrust levels.
The need to develop a high-thrust, high-specific impulse plasma propulsion system is pressing. Ionic Thrust Systems aims to achieve this by using superconducting magnets to compress plasma before ejection, significantly increasing ejection mass and velocity.
Key responsibilities include securing funding from diverse sources, establishing partnerships, building a proof of concept through simulations and small models, and gaining support from the Swiss Plasma Center to enhance credibility.
The project aims to facilitate growth by registering as an ESA BIC startup. The startup's physical location will be discussed; work can be distributed across Switzerland and Europe with frequent in-person meetings.
Required qualifications include a background in mechanical, electrical, or applied physics. Relevant industry contacts and technical expertise are also essential.
