Are you passionate about advancing the frontiers of polymer science and eager to contribute to transformative innovations in sustainable energy systems? Do you envision your research making a tangible impact on next-generation batteries and critical mineral separations? If so, an exceptional opportunity awaits you at one of Europe’s premier institutions.

The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), renowned for its pioneering research and vibrant international community, is pleased to announce multiple openings for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in the newly established Huang Lab. Dr. Rachel Huang, who will be joining EPFL as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering starting July 1, 2026, invites highly motivated candidates to become founding members of her research group. The lab will be situated at the intersection of polymer science and energy systems, with a particular emphasis on the fundamental understanding of ion and solvent transport in polymers and its translation to practical, energy-related applications.

Research Topic and Project Overview

The Huang Lab’s research agenda is centered on elucidating the molecular mechanisms governing ion and solvent transport in polymeric materials. This foundational knowledge is crucial for the rational design of advanced materials that can address pressing challenges in energy storage, energy conversion, and the efficient separation of critical minerals. By bridging the gap between fundamental science and technological innovation, the lab aims to develop novel polymers and membrane systems that enhance the performance of batteries, fuel cells, and separation processes central to the global energy transition.

Importance of the Topic in Today’s World

As the world intensifies its pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, the demand for high-performance materials that can enable efficient storage, conversion, and utilization of energy is greater than ever. Polymers play a pivotal role in these technologies, serving as electrolytes, separators, and active components in devices ranging from lithium-ion batteries to redox flow batteries and beyond. Furthermore, the secure and sustainable supply of critical minerals—essential for the production of renewable energy technologies—relies on innovative separation processes that can be enabled by advanced polymeric materials. The Huang Lab’s research thus addresses both the materials science and engineering challenges at the heart of the energy transition, with the potential to deliver breakthroughs that will shape the future of clean energy.

About The Lab And Supervisor

Dr. Rachel Huang brings a wealth of expertise in polymer science, ion transport phenomena, and energy systems to EPFL. Her interdisciplinary approach combines cutting-edge experimental techniques with theoretical modeling to unravel complex transport processes in soft materials. As a new faculty member, Dr. Huang is committed to fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating research environment where creativity and curiosity are highly valued. Members of the Huang Lab will have direct access to state-of-the-art facilities at EPFL and benefit from a robust network of academic and industrial collaborators.
